How ICC Cricket Rankings Work

The International Cricket Council (ICC) uses a rating-point system to rank all competing nations and players across the three formats of international cricket. Players accumulate points based on their performance in matches — runs scored for batters, wickets taken for bowlers — with recent matches weighted more heavily than older ones.

Test Rankings

Test cricket rankings consider only matches played in the longest format of the game. A single Test series can swing the top-10 batting or bowling rankings significantly, especially when highly rated players are in direct competition. The World Test Championship (WTC) standings run alongside the ratings but use a separate points-percentage system.

ODI Rankings

One Day International rankings use the same methodology over ODI matches. Major bilateral series and the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup have the greatest impact on ODI ratings given the volume of matches played and the quality of opposition.

T20I Rankings

T20 International rankings are updated after every officially sanctioned T20I and reflect the increasingly competitive nature of the shortest format. The rise of franchise T20 cricket has deepened the global talent pool, leading to more frequent movement in these rankings.
